Natural Setting
Another post about my trip to Belize, sorry! On the way to
the house we were staying at we drove through the village. This was my first
experience in Belize during the heaviest rain of the year. At the time the rain
had stopped but the roads were horrendous. The puddles went so deep the van
went so deep it covered the headlights in water. The houses or what they call
houses were obviously very damaged from this rain, but after spending time in
the schools with the kids and talking to the teachers, that changed nothing for
them. They were still just as happy and just as full of joy as ever. On the
days it rained the kids walked through huge puddles and got soaking wet but
still came to class. Reflecting on that it just made me realize how much I take
advantage of what I have. When it rains here, I am not affected in any way, the
buildings don’t get damaged, there aren’t leaks, I stay fairly dry because I
have protection and the proper shoes, and our roads are good enough to drive on
in the rain. I make excuses for myself all the time for not coming to class. I
also get upset when I don’t get something. The cliché “first world problems” is
very relevant in my life and I want to change that.
