Landscapes of the Sacred #2

Page 19
The first axiom talked about in Landscapes of the Sacred is "sacred place is not chosen, it chooses." I really like the idea behind this concept. It reminds me of how people keep talking about stop searching for the love of their life because if it is meant to be, that person will show up. Same goes for this concept. You cannot choose the love of your life, just like you cannot choose what place is sacred and which one is not. The book says, "Sacred place, therefore, is a construction of the imagination that affirms the independence of the holy. God chooses to reveal himself only where he wills." You can call upon God all you want but that does not guarantee that he will make himself visible to you. Patience and faith are the only things you need and when the time is right for him, then God will appear. You may be surprised in the place he decides to show up. I know this from experience. He showed up to me junior year of high school in the library when I was not even calling upon him for anything. I had in past months called on him with absolutely no luck. I was having an extremely vulnerable moment in the library and all of a sudden felt his hand on my shoulder. I had never experienced a more peaceful moment. The most unexpected places can be sacred but it is not up to you to make them that way. It is the choice of the location itself.
