“Pilgrims have often written of the “transformative” effect
on them of approaching the final altar or the holy grotto at the end of the
way.” By Turner and Turner in Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture. Page
11.
Everyone says it is not about the destination but the
journey. However, what is the journey if there is no destination. It makes
sense that pilgrims feel a transformative effect after all their hard work pays
off and they have reached their destination. I do believe it’s a slow process
that happens throughout their pilgrimage through friendship self-reliance and self-awareness
that comes from these journeys. I believe that pilgrims don’t realize the true
effect until they are finished. This is because they are going home and they realize
their mindset has changed. It is an easy miss when you are walking because it’s
a different place so it should be different. However, when they are going back
to everyday life a part of them expects to go back to their old mindset when
they don’t they realize they have transformed.
