Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture, Entry 8/15

12-4-15...2:54PM

Hello reader,

According to page 15 of the reading, when a pilgrim returns from their journey, they do not gain rank in the social structure, instead they are revered with higher piousness and respect by their peers. The book describes this as primus inter pares, or not a person of higher rank. This concept is likely due to the often times settled social systems of the world, where individuals were born into wealth and power, it cannot be earned no matter how great the achievement. However unfair this may seem to us in modern hindsight, you must recall that these are the middle ages we are speaking of. Compare it to now, if a friend of yours journeyed a long pilgrimage and returned, you would hold them to a higher respect in terms of religion and philosophy most likely, yet they would not gain monetary wealth or status in society.
