Natural Setting #2: Hiking

12/7/15

Over the summer I tended to engage in different hikes. While they were only a day trip and mostly lasted only a couple of hours, the effect they had on, not only my body, but my mind as well is something worth discussing.

Two hikes that stick out in my mind is hiking the Bull Run Mountains and the White Oak Canyon. These are two of the most popular hikes located in northern Virginia, as many on-goers seek its entity. While completing my hikes on these two mountains, I was able to allow myself to create a personal relationship with the constituents around me. Hiking with yourself or one other person really leaves room for the ability to become personally involved with the environment. It was quite tranquil, traveling along the noted path, choosing what to take in and what to focus on. May it be the bird flying overhead or watching the rain hit the boulders ahead of you, there is always some kind of natural occurrence to cue in on. For a unique moment, you are equal with all the other constituents present in this area. It’s a peculiar feeling but also a spectacular one, to be able to connect with the surrounding environment in this way. For these reasons, hiking has always been a preferable past-time for me.
