Kathleen Horning- Into
the Wild
Topic: Outside reading

In
high school, I read Into the Wild by
Jon Krakauer. He wrote about Chris McCandless, a post-graduate who left his
life in Annandale, Virginia and hitchhiked to Alaska. The book detailed
McCandless’s life from then on and how he survived in the wild. His story
relates to our class because it involved the discussion of nature and the
environment. We have discussed how people have put their lives on hold-
quitting their jobs and leaving their friends and family- to go on a long
distance hike. McCandless’s story, however, is a little different because he
gave up his entire life after he graduated. He did not plan on returning to his
home. His scenario was much more extreme.
