Books Can Heal
One of my favorite books of all time is The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. In my opinion, it is a book that everyone should read before starting high school or college. There is a moment for everybody in this book to feel related to, regardless of religion, personality, gender, race etc. There are numerous life lessons to learn from this book and one I learned was it is okay to feel a little sorry for yourself. We all have had moments in our lives where we are upset and someone asks "Are you just going to sit there and feel sorry for yourself?" The narrator and main character of this story, Charlie, brings up an excellent point at the end of this story. He says, "I think that if I ever have kids, and they are upset, I won't tell them that people are starving in China or anything like that because it wouldn't change the fact that they were upset. And even if somebody else has it much worse, that doesn't really change the fact that you have what you have. Good and bad." Feeling upset is human. It is okay to be upset over the little things in life. This does not mean you do not care about those who are also struggling, it just means you are experiencing a little emotional pain. It is good to let it out because if you are unable to and bottle it up, eventually you will overflow and explode. So whenever someone says, "Are you just going to sit there and feel sorry for yourself?" I will always reply, "Yes." No one should ever tell anyone else how they feel. It is okay to feel overwhelmed every once in awhile but also keep in mind that God never gives you more than you can handle.
