“… during the
intervening liminal phase, the state of the ritual subject (the “passenger” or
“liminar”) becomes ambiguous. He passes through a realm or dimension that has
few or none of the attributes of the past or coming state….” – By Turner and
Turner in Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture. Page 2.
College is a perfect example of what he is talking about
with this quote. College is nothing like your childhood and teen years. When your
parents made the rules and made sure you did not mess up at least too badly.
However, it’s not like adulthood where you are responsible for bills and not
reliant on your parents at all. It is this twilight zone where you are
responsible for your actions but you still answer to your parents. It has some
of the perks of childhood and some of adulthood. College is supposed to prepare
us for the next stage in life. However, my next stage won’t have tests or long
winter breaks. All I have learned from this liminal stage seems to be that I
have no idea what I’m doing. Maybe that’s the idea, you’re never going to be
prepared for adulthood. However, I at least am learning how to handle what I
was used to doing minus my parents before I enter a larger scarier chapter of
my life.
