Image and Pilgrimage in
Christian Culture
In the introduction of
Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture Deborah Ross writes about death and
states, “ Secondly, embarking on pilgrimage involves passing into a liminal or
threshold time that involves “metaphoric” death on several levels. This passage
occurs through separation from normal social existence, with the dissolving of
social rank between fellow pilgrims, and through the liminal nature of
pilgrimage, which involves “in-between state of life-in-death.”
Separating one’s self from
the outside world and completely breaking off from technology can be a metaphor
for a type of death. When you do this you are becoming one with nature and
ignoring what the outside world is telling you what to do. One of the easiest
ways to do this is going on a pilgrimage.
