The Phenomenology of Prayer: Prayer as Kenosis

December 1, 2015

In the book, “The Phenomenology of Prayer,” the author discusses the concept of ‘prayer as kenosis’ in the fourth chapter.  Kenosis refers to the emptying of self, where the ego moves from the center so that the person may come into a reciprocal relationship with others. The emptying of self is required in order to engage in the action of praying because one must become completely enveloped in the communication with God. In order to have a complete and pure connection with God when praying, the action of kenosis is required. Based on the author’s statements about kenosis, I believe the concept is achievable by anyone. One just has to have the mindset and will power to do so. I think kenosis is a healthy practice that can be very useful for any individual. It’s refreshing to empty oneself of everything that has been occupying one’s mind and body, and just open up to a clean slate. And while the practice of kenosis is most commonly required for the action of praying, I believe it can also be utilized for ultimately any occasion that one may seem fit.
