“I was told it would be better to walk alone, even though I
would encounter many people along the way. Everything I carried with me would
be a distraction. I should learn to let go.: - By Shirley MacLaine in The
Camino. Page 13.
After reading trails journal, I believe solitude and
contemplation to be one of the necessary elements of a successful spiritual journey.
Our everyday lives are so busy and chaotic it can be hard to focus and think
about anything other than surviving. Our lives are a series of events that take
almost no attention. We know when we are going to wake up what we are going to
and even what are we going to eat. The trail forces people to think about what they’re
going to do each day. Where are they going to stop? What do they want to eat? Every
day is a different adventure with different conditions. I think you need to allow
yourself to experience some days by yourself. It allows you to have faith in
yourself and your ability. Time alone also gives you time to reflect on what
you need, how you want to live, and what you want your life to be like. While
time with friends and people you need along the way is important. Time with
yourself allows you to make long-lasting changes in your life.
