Trail Magic- Kaitlin Pommert

November 8th
Topic of Choice- Trail Magic

Little acts of kindness are so easy to do and make a large impact. I especially think this is true for long distance hiking. We don’t call it acts of kindness when we are talking about long distance hiking we call it trail magic but that’s what it is. In the real world we forget how much of a difference our small actions make on others. We are so focused on ourselves that we completely forget to stop and help others even in small ways. I think this is why trail magic is powerful. People go on long distance hikes for a variety of reasons but a lot of them stem from some kind of discontentment with the outside world. Trail magic is a reminder that people are kind and look out for each other.  It creates this connection between people and helps to rebuild faith with the world. If someone you never knew or did anything for can take time to buy food for you or open up their home maybe the world is okay. Trail magic is restorative and that’s why I think it’s such a vital part of the long distance hiking experience.
