About 4 years ago I went on a 14 day 80+ mile hiking trip with a crew of guys from my Boy Scout troop. When first entering in to this experience I was nervous to be completely "out there" for two weeks relying on my own knowledge and that of my friends to get us through the trail and back to base camp safely. As the trip went on the nerves went away and the experience of the back country became joyous. Every night we gathered around the fire pit and linked arms in a trail ritual thanking God for the day and the trail essentially if I remember correctly. One day as we walked we prayed the Rosary( a Catholic tradition honoring Mary). It was a brief awakening in my own faith and really a recognition of the beauty this world offered and that God put it all there for us to encounter. Not only encounter it but encounter Him through it. I enjoyed that experience as much as any trip or vacation I have ever been on and yearn to go back experience God in the New Mexico mountains again!
