The Phenomenology of Prayer 1

On page 15 of this book there is a quote that grabbed my attention "So it remains an open question whether one's youthful heart is as fully into thanks and confession and intercession as into petition."(15). Now to me as a Christian I think that we are all called children of God and we are taught to accept our Faith in a childlike manner, that meaning without worry or second thought just going right for it. There are numerous quotes throughout the Bible that support that type of childlike attitude we are called to. But here it provides an interesting idea, That we are from an early age formed or rather taught to pray for what we need, petition. That in itself can easily translate into intercession for others whether they be more meaningful like for someone's serious health issues, or just for a friend to have a good day. The second two types of prayer mentioned are less childlike though, confession. Many children do not necessarily know right from wrong fully. How can they confess doing something wrong to God if they did not know it was wrong? Better yet, how do they know what to say to God to confess it? it is slightly more difficult for me to see this as childlike. Giving thanks is a type of prayer that can be childlike, but that is giving thanks for family, food, good things that happen. When one grows deeper in their faith though it is more about giving thanks for the people or events God puts in your life whether they are good or bad understanding that God did it for a reason to give you room to grow as a person and closer to Him. That second part is less childlike. I guess my point our prayers are childlike to an extent and certainly always childlike in that we put full trust in God to answer them how He wills!
