Communicating with Nature for the First Time- Kaitlin Pommert

November 2nd
Experience in Nature Setting
I’m not an outdoorsy person. I never have been the type of person to spend a lot of time in nature. So it’s safe to say I don’t know a lot about how nature communicates. I understand a plant wilts when it needs water but that’s it. So when I learned I would have to do a journal entry about communicating with nature I was terrified. I was sure I wouldn’t see anything. To be honest I don’t think I would have been able to see anything alone. However, I was fascinated by what I did learn when Professor Redick was explaining it to the class.  I never knew that plants used scent as a form of communication. I thought the only purpose was to attract bees and such. The coolest communication that Professor Redick showed us was the patch that had a lot of couple year trees. I didn’t even notice that it till it was mentioned but I do know trees need sunlight to grow and why would they have all gotten sunlight at close enough to the same time to be the same size. Hurricane Isabel had taken out so many trees that young ones were allowed to grow. That was such a cool realization to me. You could see the past through nature almost. By just looking around and seeing you can learn so much. While I still am not good at communicating with nature I’m now very interested and plan to hopefully learn more on my own.
