The Phenomenology of Prayer
“We learn how prayer is the task of a lifetime, so that even
those who have been praying all their lives may not have gotten much further
than a kindergartener.” Page 19
I really found this quote super
applicable in my own life. For two distinct reason one is I recently have
become aware of how little I know about prayer. Praying is one of the easiest yet
hardest tasks. What makes good prayer? How do you pray differently in the hard
times versus the good? It’s always been easy for me to turn to god when things
become hard, when I need him. However, remembering to be thankful and praise
him in the good times is more difficult for me. It’s not that I’m unaware of
the fact I should be praying, I just forget. Also when I do remember I find
prayer to be more difficult during the good times. It’s something I’m
personally working on and this quote is a nice reminder that it’s not just me
as humans we can always approve our connection with the divine.
The second reason I like this quote
is that it’s a good reminder of what we can learn. Children don’t overthink
prayer and they believe in things with a power that most of us lose. It’s
important to remember that they can be great teachers, children, because they
have yet to be tainted. I don’t think people give children enough credit and
this to me was a reminder to listen, watch and learn from them.
