Landscapes of the Sacred
“Above all else sacred place
is ‘storied place’”- Lane
We talked about this statement
a lot in class, but it took a while for me to truly understand it. I understood
it in the sense that religious places are there because of the stories we tell.
None of us was there when Abraham offered Isaac to god as a sacrifice. Stories
and tradition are the reason that people believe the Temple Mount is that
location, nothing more. However, sacred
place doesn’t need to be religious. It does have to be a landmark or a famous
place to be sacred. Most sacred place are places we don’t even realize are
sacred to us. My grandma has a house on the Eastern shore in Maryland. That
place will forever be sacred in my heart. We have a huge family reunion there
every summer and the fun adventure that have happened over the years are
countless. It might not be a religious place. However, I do believe I have a
spiritual journey when I’m there. I realize technology is less important than I
make it every time I go. I also realize that the important things in my life
are my family and friends. So I believe
sacred place is more encompassing than religious sacred place.
