Kenosis- Kaitlin Pommert

November 10
Class Discussion
In class we talked about Kenosis or the decentering of self. I have been thinking if this is a truly possible concept or more idealist concept. Is it truly possible to get rid of ourselves in the thinking process? Yes, it is possible to be selfless and to think of others first. However, those we manage to put first our those we care about. Yes, I would much rather suffer than have my friends suffer, but that’s not really selfless. I would rather feel the pain than have to helplessly what them endure it. I am still gaining something. Is it possible for us humans to really do anything without expecting to gain something? When we do good deeds there is always a part of us concerned with are wellbeing above all else. On the other hand, is doing the selfless thing despite of concern for ourselves even greater. We know there is a better choice for us yet we do the selfless thing. Doesn’t it make it almost better that we are taking ourselves out and making the hard choice. Is that kenosis? I’m not sure. I do know that if its possible kenosis is difficult and the result of practice and I hope that I’m one step closer to achieving it today.
