Landscapes of the
Sacred introduces readers to sacred places. It can be difficult to find a
sacred place that suits the soul of each individual person. “To experience a
place as sacred is it participate, knowingly or unknowingly, in a whole history
of cultural tensions and conflicting claims, even ecological shifts” (p. 4).
The idea of a sacred place can be complex. My question is, can sacred places
only exist outdoors in the environment?
I
ask this question because I am unsure of where my own sacred place would be. At
first, I would say my sacred place is my bedroom. My bedroom is the place I
retreat to when I am feeling overwhelmed and need to be alone. I am not very
religious, but sometimes I pray. I pray to God or some other higher power and
ask for guidance and relief. Perhaps nothing life-changing happens, but I do
feel much more relaxed and open for communication when I am in my bedroom. Although
my sacred place may not be in an ecological setting, the quiet is good for
efficient communication with God.
