“The choice not to choose is the choice to remain
unconscious and, therefore, to wield power irresponsibly” pg. 138
In Gary Zukav’s book “Seat of the Soul”, the topic of choice
is expanded by creating a greater awareness of what it means to make choices.
Far too many people feel powerless in their lives and fall victim to the
beliefs that outside forces are the only way to make change. The author expands
our definition of choice to include our thoughts. With the expansion of the
definition of choice to include a personal responsibility for our actions and
outcomes may feel like a foreign concept. Blaming others for our situations is
a common practice; looking outside the self is widely accepted. To get a feel
for the concept of choice is an inside job, a person can begin to act as a
witness to their own thoughts. The idea is to detach from making a thought
right or wrong or even good or bad. From a place of neutrality notice the
thoughts one thinks and realize that each of us have a choice to continue down
a line of thought or to make new thought choices. The thoughts one thinks are a
combination of the way a person was raised, religious and social views, and
natural personality tendencies. The “wielding of power irresponsibly” pertains
to shutting down to the idea that each of us have a personal responsibility to
wake up to our inner-landscape of thoughts. Recognizing that not shifting your
thinking to include a responsibility for your thoughts is a choice too. Doing
nothing is a choice.
